About Sheffield Collegiate and How to Join us

We are one of the oldest established clubs in the area, based at Abbeydale Park Sheffield, with excellent playing facilities on both our main grounds on the same site. Founded in 1881 by the Old Boys of Sheffield Collegiate College, we played variously at Tinsley, Bawtry Road and sharing Bramall Lane until moving to Abbeydale Park in 1921. The ground has since been used by Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Derbyshire County Cricket Clubs for first class games.

We are known in the cricketing world as a club producing great and proficient players and officials: Michael Vaughan - Former England Captain; Joe Root – Current England Test Captain; Richard Kettleborough (played for Yorkshire and Middlesex) – named Umpire of the Year 2015 by the ICC Elite Panel; and Billy Root –Glamorgan County Cricket Club. We are proud of them and their achievements and of those of many other Collegiate players who have gone on to greater things.

With the help of sponsors we have also sometimes been able to strengthen our first team with guest players such as West Indian internationals Ian Bishop and Kenny Benjamin, Pakistan international Nadeem Khan, and more local stars such as Azeem Rafiq and (currently) Shaaiq Choudhry, all of whom have helped immensely with the development of our squads at all levels

We can (and do) boast having won the Yorkshire League seven times, the National Club Competition in 2000 at Lord’s and the 1984 National Under 13 Club Championship, together with 35 other Leagues and Championships. In 2019 we reached the last 4 in England in the National Club T20 Championship.

In 2022 the men's first team will again play in the prestigious ECB Yorkshire South Premier League (in which they came second in 2021). We operate four further teams on Saturdays, together with Sunday and midweek teams. Our Sunday team will again play in the Barnsley & District League First Division and the Midweek team will play in the Sheffield Alliance Midweek Cricket League (which they won in 2021).

We have our own coaching scheme of 120 6-18 year olds participating in the Root Academy Cricket Programme. We invite you to join us on any Friday evening during the season to enjoy our Junior Root Academy Cricket training for players aged 6-11, which is a great fun introduction to cricket and where our junior players can then go on to join our U11's to U18's junior squads, competing in the Ben Jessop Sheffield Junior League as well as in regional and national junior competitions.

Junior cricket is the backbone of our club. We have strong links with all of the local primary schools, offering taster days, curriculum time coaching and tournament days at Abbeydale Park. Our schools coaching is coordinated and run by players and coaches at SCCC. Our work in schools is often the first step for young people into cricket before then coming to try our sessions on a Friday night.

SCCC is accredited under the ECB Clubmark scheme, the national cross-sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. We have close links with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

We have a rapidly expanding Women and Girls Section which welcomes women and girls from 11+ of all abilities. We are seen as one of the major Women's Sections in South Yorkshire and have both hardball and softball teams. We offer a welcoming environment, regular coaching and we provide all-female and mixed opportunities for competitive players who wish to play at a high standard, while always welcoming new players and beginners. Some of our women are complete beginners looking for fun, exercise and a way of meeting new people. Others are experienced and skilled players wanting to compete at a higher level.
